Following the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old North African motorist by police, France suffered a fourth night of unrest and theft.
Beginning in the Paris district of Nanterre, where the boy was killed on Tuesday, the turmoil swiftly extended to Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse, and other towns.
Rioters burned cars and buildings on fire, pillaged stores, and clashed with police. According to the interior ministry, 994 people were arrested overnight, an increase over the 875 held on Thursday.
Despite deploying 45,000 police personnel, the administration has been unable to stop the bloodshed.
President Emmanuel Macron has condemned the violence and urged for calm.
